Launched in 2003, Taobao (www.taobao.com) is the largest online retail website in China, offering both C2C and B2C shopping platforms as well as a variety of features and services. It provides a platform for small businesses and individual entrepreneurs to open online retail stores that mainly cater to consumers in China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. The company's mission is to foster a comprehensive e-commerce ecosystem that will provide partners and consumers with the best user experience possible.

Taobao currently has more than 500 million product listings at any given time and serves more than 210 million registered users. It receives more than 40 million unique visitors daily and is one of the top 20 most visited websites in the world according to Alexa. Transaction volume on Taobao (gross merchandise volume or GMV) exceeded RMB200 billion (US$29 billion) in 2009.

 

Alimama (www.alimama.com), an online advertising exchange and affiliate network for millions of publishers in China, and Koubei.com (www.koubei.com), China's leading classified listing website, are both also part of the Taobao platform. Taobao is wholly owned by Alibaba Group.

 

For foreign brands, it is a good platform to find good dealers and enter the magic market via Taobao.com, meanwhile, you could also find some cheap merchandise from such a big product listing pool, if you can read Chinese language, it would be much better to source good products via Taobao.com, than the English version Aliexpress.com, which is the English version platform, with much less product listing and sometimes higher prices as well.

In spite of the good picture presented above, due to the heavy competition and increasing cost of advertisement on the web, the actual situation of most of the small shops in Taobao.com is not good, a lot of shops are making a loss, and with the costs escalating these several years, the shops are suffering and in the dilemma how to make a breakthrough. meanwhile, in order to survive in the tough market, the shops are competing on the price war, sometimes, you could find the top selling goods are not always good, sometimes the quality could be disgusting, not mentioning there are a lot of fake products, you need to pay attention if you want to purchase some brand goods on the platform.
